Perth Links

Perth is the host city for the 2011 IVCF. It's a nice city. We like it. Prettier than Melbourne, nicer climate than Brisbane, more tall buildings than Adelaide, quieter than Sydney, fewer politicians than Canberra... and further north than Hobart. Got it all, really.

We would like you to enjoy your stay in Perth as much as possible! Having all the information that you might need before you go can really make a difference, so here are a number of websites that may enhance your travel plans.

Local Information

Transport

Perth has two bus terminals in the city. The Wellington Street bus station is approximately 200m from the train station and services the northern suburbs. The City Busport is at the bottom of Mill Street on Mounts Bay Road next to the Esplanade and services the southern suburbs.

Both terminals have easy to follow information about times and routes as well as an information booth to answer your questions.

Late night buses leave at midnight, 1:00am and 2:00am every Friday and Saturday night from Wellington Street Bus Station going to Mirrabooka and Morley (northern suburbs only). After dark the buses will stop anywhere.

Call Transperth on 13 22 13 with any questions or visit the Transperth web site.

CATS

CATS (Central Area Transport Systems) is a free bus service which operates in the City Centre and Fremantle. They only stop at CAT stops, which are marked with the colour of the bus and a black cat insignia.

Taxis

The ride from the domestic airport to the Perth CBD is approximately twenty minutes and should cost around $16 to $20.

Trains

There are four train lines:

All of the trains meet centrally, at the Perth Railway Station, which is across the road from Forrest Place.

Ferries

The Barrack Street to South Perth ferry leaves approximately every 20-30 minutes from the Barrack Street Jetty on Riverside Drive in Perth and takes you to the Mends Street jetty on the South Perth Esplanade. You can catch the ferry from either jetty, and the trip one way takes approximately 7 minutes. Tickets are available from vending machines on both jetties.

Accommodation

Some IV travellers prefer to arrange their own accommodation instead of being billetted with someone else. The places listed below suit a range of budgets, listed in order from least expensive to most expensive.

Student Colleges

Mostly motel style guest rooms, single and double, from $30/night. Check the websites for further details and bookings. These colleges are next to UWA, which is near Kings Park and walking distance (for the fit!) to Subiaco cafe district. Approximately $10 taxi fare to Northbridge or Leederville cafe districts.

Serviced Apartments

Serviced apartments generally have kitchen and laundry facilities. Many are available with multiple bedrooms, so you can share the costs of preparing meals and using taxis. They're also usually quite new and lovely to stay in!

Hotels and Motels

Cafes and Nightclubs

The main dining out areas in Perth, are in Northbridge, Leederville, Subiaco, Claremont, Victoria Park, Scarborough Beach and Fremantle.

In each of these areas, there are usually a choice of Italian, Greek, Indian, Chinese, Japanese and popular fast food outlets to suit all budgets.

A main meal in a cafe restaurant in Perth will cost about $15.
